Food speaks volumes that history books cannot. At Ishtar Gate, our meals are not just regular dishes—they're historic stash. Today, we're revealing the most ancient and traditional hidden gems: the ancient deep rotted Iraqi food recipe from the rich gastronomic history of Mesopotamia.

The former capital of Mesopotamia, Iraq, created recipes that old back as far as the Sumerians and Babylonians. These original authentic dishes involve delicious ingredients such as lamb, dates, yogurt, herbs, and spices. Imagine this: (slow-cooked) lamb paired with spicy rice with a touch of the traditional and ancient Iraqi flavour, just as at Ishtar Gate.

Alongside with our Pomegranate Lamb Pilaf, we're thrilled to introduce another time honored ancestral recipe: a Middle Eastern- and Eastern European-inspired beef short rib dish that is of venerable age.

This dish is based on a recipe nearly 800 years old, combining:

Slow-braised Black Angus beef short ribs in pomegranate juice

Rice cooked in beef broth, sweet and sour

Fresh pomegranate seeds

A vertical bone garnish with minced chives, adding a striking visual and flavor contrast

It’s a feast that reflects both ancient culinary genius and a modern eye for plating.

Ever stopped to think why ancient recipes still matter?

Did you ever ponder why anyone would want to revive a dish from 2,000 years ago?

Simply yes, because these aren’t just like any other meal—they’re flavorful time capsules, each bite telling a story from the past.

They reflect how food evolved through cultural exchange, regional farming, and seasonal rituals. They show how ancestors adapted and survived, turning simple local ingredients into deeply satisfying meals.
